In the last article, the engineer of micet craft explained the details of the malt grist case, material-water mixer, mash tun and its heating method and process selection one by one. Let’s continue, shall we?

We have already talked about the style, material, heat preservation, manway door and visual lamp of lauter tun so it will not be repeated. Now we will explain the key points separately.

How to choose a cost-effective craft beer qquipment

lauter area

It’s not that the larger the lauter area, the better, but it should correspond to the concentration of the beer you make. The higher the concentration, the larger the filtration area, because the weight per unit area of the sieve plate and the thickness of the bad layer have an upper limit. Especially the thickness of the spent grains, it is difficult to lauter if it is too thick. Correspondingly, the time becomes longer, which not only increases the time cost but also has a bad influence on the beer quality. Originally, filtration is to separate the spent grains at the fastest speed on the basis of ensuring the clarity of the wort. The longer it is soaked in it, the more substances that are unfavorable to the beer are released. Therefore, if there is a special concentration requirement, it should be explained in advance, and the lauter tun diameter will be calculated and adjusted according to your maximum concentration during design.

sieve style

The sieve plate style is divided into welding and milling. The former is made of 2 layers of stainless steel strips warp and weft cross piezoresistive welding, with a gap of 0.9mm, forming a triangular section with a narrow upper and a lower width, except for the plane of the upper layer of stainless steel strips, other areas are lauterable areas.

Milled sieve plate is to mill out rows of triangular cross-section grooves with 0.7mm width on a stainless steel plate with an alloy milling cutter of a milling machine. In order to increase the load-bearing strength, it is necessary to empty the knife in the middle to form a large gap, and the overall processing is completed and polished.

  • Advantages: The opening rate of the same area is incomparable with the milling screen. This has to be a trade-off. If you want to look good, you have to accept the reality of low opening rate. If you want to be practical, it is not so beautiful.
  • Disadvantages: The welded sieve plate is relatively uneven due to the heating during the processing. Although it has been leveled in the later stage, it still cannot be compared with the milled sieve plate, and the appearance is also slightly rough.

bottom style

Judging from the cleaning effect under the sieve plate, it is still better to have a cone angle, the if feeding volume is not too large (below 2000L),this is optional. After all, when the sieve plate is flushed, the particulates will flushed down the cone to the sewage outlet, instead of rushing from one position to another, like a flat bottom, only part of it falls into the distributed sewage outlet.But in terms of support strength, it should be a flat bottom.

Sieve plate installation

The ideal state is one bolt to fix the sieve plate, which is quick and easy to disassemble and assemble. In particular, some brewers have to disassemble and assemble the sieve plate every day, which is a waste of time and hard work.

  • Reinforced type: the most inadvisable method is to weld the vertical plate under the sieve plate, and the section of 4*40mm is even a small one. Directly welded on the screen plate, the appearance is destroyed and the weight is increased. Although there is not a single bolt on the surface, the weight alone is unbearable.
  • Bracket type: Use L or ⼕-shaped stainless steel to weld the square plane vertically and horizontally, with column support below. Then fix the sieve plate on it, there are more than ten bolts. However,the sieve plate is lightweight when taking out it,but it’s difficult to disassemble.

raking blade

There are many types of raking blade in terms of processing technology, which are simply divided into the following categories:

  • Welding type: there is no machining trace, it is completely composed of round tube + square tube + stainless steel sheet. The blade triangles are laser cut and have no couplings. The direct drilling and the shaft of the reducer are fixed with bolts, and the fixed flange of the reducer is cut from steel plate.
  • Semi-machined type: there is a coupling, but the shaft is polished by a thick-walled round tube. The raking blade is cut by laser, and there is a half sleeve between the raking blade shaft and the arm, which can be disassembled. Each blade is directly welded to the cross arm, and the fixed flange of the reducer is machined.
  • Machining type: flanges, shafts, couplings, and half sleeves of joints are all machined, and the blades are respectively fixed on the cross arm by bolts. Some customers have designed the joints to be round in order to not store materials and easy to clean,it’s also beautiful and practical.

Reduction ratio

Small equipment does not pay much attention to the speed of raking, because it does not need to be rotated when lautering. However, for a slightly larger lauter tun, especially for continuous feeding requirements, in order not to affect the wort turbidity during filtration, the speed of the reducer is controlled at 0.25~0.4 rpm, which requires a larger reduction ratio.

Raking blade lift

When the lauteration is difficult, it is necessary to plough the wort to loosen it to improve the lauteration speed, but the whole grain layer cannot be ploughed together, which will inevitably affect the wort turbidity, so it is carried out from top to bottom. This method is generally used for equipment above 2T, and the height of the outrigger will be increased with lifting and lowering, so if your venue is limited in height, don’t choose this way, you can use the reversed grain discharge  or chain type grain discharge.

Ways to discharge grains

There are side grain discharge and bottom grain discharge, and the side grain discharge without lifting is very convenient and practical(below 2T).With the scraper, it is very convenient to discharge the grain. The grain discharge flaps must be the same height as the sieve plate, otherwise it will affect grain discharge;The bottom grain discharge is generally used with screw conveyor which is more common in lauter tun with large volume.
The number of words is limited, so I can only describe it briefly and concisely. It is too different from the original plan. It seems like there’s needs to be a part 3; Anyway,the key to the lauter tun is lautering should be quick, the wort should be clear,and grain discharge should be clean! Others are relatively secondary.
