Why choose an electric brewing system?

Why choose an electric brewing system?

Electric brewing is becoming popular among homebrewers and beer enthusiasts. Electric brewing systems are all-in-one brewing units that combine the functions of a mash tun, kettle, and hot liquor tank into one heated vessel. This streamlined design simplifies the brewing process and is easy to use for both novice and experienced brewers.

What is an electric brewing system?

Electric brewing involves using electricity to heat and control temperature throughout the brewing process. This is achieved through the use of an electric brewing system that includes a heating element, temperature controller, and various accessories. With electric brewing, you have precise temperature control, allowing you to brew a variety of styles of beer with consistency.

One of the key components of an electric brewing system is the heating element. This provides the heat needed to bring the water to the temperature required for brewhouse and boiling. Electric heating elements are usually made of stainless steel and are designed to be immersed in liquid.

  • Electric heating elements: These elements provide consistent and adjustable heat for precise temperature control during mashing and boiling.
  • Digital Controllers: These interfaces allow you to program and check the brewing stages, maintaining optimal temperatures throughout the process.
  • Integrated pumps: These pumps circulate the wort during the mashing process, ensuring even grain extraction and a more consistent flavor profile.
  • Grain Baskets: These baskets separate the mash from the wort, simplifying the filtration process (removing the wort from the grain bed).
  • Large kettles: These kettles provide ample space for mashing grains, boiling wort, and fermenting beer.

Advantages of using an electric brewing system

Precise temperature control

One of the most significant advantages of using electric heating elements in home brewing is the precise temperature control they provide. Maintaining the correct temperatures during the mashing, boiling, and fermentation stages is crucial to producing high-quality beer. Electrical components, whether embedded in the kettle or a separate device, allow for precise temperature regulation and stability.

energy efficiency

Electric brewing systems are generally more energy efficient than gas brewing systems. Gas burners can be wasteful because they release heat into the environment, so it is necessary to compensate for the heat loss by using more energy. Electric heating elements, so, transfer heat to the liquid, minimizing energy waste. This not only saves costs but also reduces the environmental impact of brewing activities.

Clean brewing environment

Electric brewing eliminates the need for an open flame, which can create unpleasant odors and affect the flavor of your beer. When using a gas burner, the combustion process can introduce unwanted aromas and flavors into the brewing process, especially if the burner is not  maintained. The electric heating element produces a clean and neutral heat source, ensuring your beer is protected from external influences.

Safe brewing environment

Safety is a top priority when home brewing and electric heating elements offer several advantages in this regard. They end the risk of gas leaks or explosions associated with propane or natural gas burners. Additionally, electrical systems often have built-in safety features, such as automatic shutdown in the event of overheating or boiling.

save space

Electric brewing units are generally more compact and need less space than gas burners and propane tanks. This makes them an excellent choice for homebrewers with limited brewing space, such as those brewing in an apartment or smaller kitchen. Electric heating elements can be integrated into a single container, such as a kettle, reducing the need for many appliances.

easy to clean

Cleaning your brewing equipment is a critical step in maintaining beer quality and hygiene. Electric heating elements are generally easier to clean than gas burners. Since there are no open flames or complex burner components, electrical components are less prone to carbon buildup and residue. This makes post-brew cleanup easier and less time-consuming.

Disadvantages of using an electric brewing system

In most areas, electricity is expensive and you may have to pay more during peak times. Additionally, if you own a larger brewery, using electricity may not be workable because your building cannot handle the required power demand. If you have a smaller scale, say a 3.5 barrel (~400L) electric brewer may be the best solution as most buildings can cater for this type of brewery.

Additionally, if you are a brewpub, space may be an issue, and electric equipment takes up less space as there is no boiler or firebox.

Yet, if your brewery has a capacity of more than 10 barrels (approximately 1,200 liters), electric beer is generally not an option. The amount of electricity required is too much for the building to bear.

Operation of electric brewing systems

  1. Mashing: Fill the system with water and add crushed grains. Electric heating elements raise the water temperature to the optimal range for soaking the grains, activating enzymes, and extracting sugars and flavors. An integrated pump can be used to circulate the wort during mashing, ensuring even extraction.
  2. Filtration: After mashing, lift or remove the grain basket to separate the wort (sugar-rich liquid) from the spent grains.
  3. Boil: Boil the wort and add hops to increase bitterness, aroma, and preservation effect. Preprogrammed boil curves or manual settings can be used to control boil duration and hop addition.
  4. Cooling: cool the wort to a specific temperature suitable for yeast fermentation. This can be achieved by using an immersion cooler or wort cooler connected to the system.
  5. Fermentation: The cooled wort is transferred to a fermenter and yeast is added to it. During fermentation, yeast consumes the sugars in the wort and produces alcohol and carbon dioxide.
  6. Bottling or Kegging: After fermentation is complete, the beer is bottled or kegged to be conditioned and carbonated before being enjoyed.

Electric beer brewing heating elements are becoming popular among homebrewers. They provide precise temperature control, energy efficiency, a cleaner brewing environment, and a safer brewing experience.
