A tank’s grade stamp tells you less than its weld record does. Two systems both marked “304 stainless” can last five years or twenty-five depending on shell thickness, weld method, and whether the water touching the metal has been treated first.

What “Stainless Steel Brewing Equipment” Actually Means

When a brewery equipment listing says “stainless steel,” it’s shorthand for a narrow family of alloys — almost always 304 or 316L in this industry, sometimes mixed within the same build. A fermenter’s cone might be one grade, its jacket another, and its fittings a third. The catalog description rarely says which part is which, which is the first thing worth asking about before comparing quotes.

Neither grade is “better” in the abstract. A misconception worth correcting here: buyers sometimes assume 316L is the safe upgrade regardless of context, then pay a premium for corrosion resistance their water chemistry never demanded. How to Inspect a Factory’s Fabrication Before You Order

  1. Request the mill certificate for the actual batch of sheet stock, not a generic grade datasheet.
