CIP system related configuration

CIP system related configuration

To maximize yields, the craft beer industry relies on a combination of clean-in-place (CIP) design, engineering, installation, control, monitoring, service, and repair expertise. Design and engineering expertise are especially valuable when upgrading CIP systems to improve water and chemical usage efficiency and optimize cleaning cycle duration and frequency. Therefore, it is important to understand the relevant configurations in a CIP system and help when starting to design a CIP system.
Relevant configuration of the CIP system in the craft beer industry:
The brewing, conditioning, and storage of craft beer must take place in large stainless steel tanks that are frequently cleaned, so CIP systems are designed to circulate cleaners through the tanks and pipes, and then rinse off the chemicals in a flush cycle, all without Disassemble complex brewing equipment and fermentation tanks.
Cleaning procedures for brewery CIP systems typically consist of multiple steps including a pre-rinse, circulating acid and/or caustic wash solutions, further water rinses between wash cycles, circulating sanitizing solutions, and a final rinse with fresh water. In some cases, it is also necessary to complete the drying cycle.

Hygiene and daily cleaning of brewery equipment is arguably the biggest challenge for brewers, but a good cleaning-in-place system (CIP System) can help. It may not be an exciting topic, but cleanliness is as essential to brewing quality craft beer like hops, water, and malt. It doesn’t matter whether you brew beer at home or

Spray device

Spray device
In addition to the correct CIP system design and size when selecting a spray unit, the correct size and location of the spray unit are critical to effective tank cleaning. The process and application determine which unit will provide the most effective cleaning:

Static spray ball

As the name suggests, the static spray ball is fixed in place so it doesn’t spin inside the tank. The direction of spraying of a large number of small jets of solution is determined by the pattern of drilled holes in the ball.
This is the least expensive option, but also uses the most water because they rely on absolute volume to remove soil loads. Improperly designed and drilled static spray balls can prevent proper cleaning of tank tops.

Rotary spray ball

Rotary spray ball is to combine the reliability of static spray ball with the flexibility of rotation so that the rotary spray ball has the advantage of more targeted cleaning liquid coverage in the tank. Their heavier design allows higher water flow than most static spray balls for more effective cleaning.

Rotary sprinkler

Curved and straight slots in the body of the rotary spray head emit fanned jets of solution that swirl in a pattern throughout the entire vessel for a vibrating impact effect and considerable cascading flow, which is effective for large vessels with heavier soiling.

Rotary spray head

When a high impact force is required to properly clean a fermenter or vessel, a rotary jet sprayer is an answer. Their multi-axis rotation delivers extremely high-impact cleaning fluid to all areas of the tank in a precise 360° pattern. The high-pressure capability can use significantly less water compared to other spray devices.

Pump

Pump

Supply pump

CIP systems use pumps to provide the necessary flow and turbulence to effectively scrub the interior of pipes or drive the movement of power tank cleaning units. These are usually sanitary-grade centrifugal pumps.

Oil return pump

Brewery equipment that uses spray units for cleaning requires rapid removal of CIP solution to eliminate solution build-up in the equipment. The return pump was sized to rapidly remove the spent solution from the processing equipment at a rate approximately 10% higher than the supply pump. The return pump is usually a hygienic stainless steel centrifugal pump or liquid ring pump with washable seals.

Chemical addition pump

To ensure accuracy and avoid employee exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, chemical dosing pumps handle cleaning agents for you. These pumps can be of many types, including air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) or peristaltic pumps.

Heating system

Heating system
There are many heating options available for CIP systems, each with its own advantages:

Plate and frame heat exchanger

Steam pressure requirements are relatively low (approximately 50 psi), so plate and frame heat exchangers are a common heating method in CIP systems. High efficiency and relatively affordable price are also the reasons why plate and frame heat exchangers are the most common heating method.

Shell and tube heat exchanger

This is a simple, low-maintenance in-line heating option that is common in many CIP systems but may require higher vapor pressures and volumes to heat the solution quickly and adequately.

Direct steam injection

When steam is pumped through pipes, precise metering of the steam directly and into the cleaning solution is generally faster and more accurate than other heating options. The initial capital expenditure with this option is usually higher, but the cost is offset by the savings from eliminating the need for steam and condensate control components.

Electric heating

While electric heating may be slower and more expensive than other options, electric heating can be a very good option if other heating options are not available.

Pipes and valves

Pipes and valves
The piping and valve layout in a CIP system should be designed to maximize the effective control of each CIP process.

Efficient pipelines in breweries

  • Should be the appropriate diameter to provide flow and pressure requirements.
  • The shortest route should be taken.
  • There should be no low circulation or no circulation plumbing (or sanitary dead ends).

Valve controls flow

Valves can be operated either manually or automatically, but manual valves require operator intervention at every step of the cleaning cycle. Whereas automatic operation can program automatically actuated valves to coordinate with each other during all stages of cleaning and require no operator intervention.

Automatic control

Automatic control
CIP systems must meet and maintain cleanliness requirements during each cycle. In manual systems, cleaning activities can be subject to guesswork and inconsistency due to human error, resulting in higher cleaning costs and potential safety risks. Of course, a CIP system with some degree of automation helps ensure consistency and high quality in the brewery.
Key instrument
If the efficiency of a CIP system is to be maximized, close control and monitoring of system functions are required. For breweries, the following instrumental measurements and reports are key variables that affect CIP operations.

Temperature transmitter

  • Detects caustic and acid solution sequences as well as tank temperature.
  • The heating system can be signaled as needed to adjust the temperature.
  • A probe in the return line detects when the return water temperature reaches the desired set point and can start a timer.

Level transmitter/level probe

  • Monitor wash and rinse tank water levels.
  • An electrical signal can be sent to automatically open and close the valve as needed, making it easy to add water or chemicals.
  • Make sure there is enough liquid volume to allow for the cleaning cycle.

Pressure gauges and transmitters

  • Make sure that the fluid pressure is sufficient for the spray unit to function optimally.
  • When the pressure is too high or too low, a blockage or interruption in the circuit can be detected.

Flowmeter

  • Helps operators maintain scrubbing action.
  • Flow metering helps maintain a highly efficient CIP system by ensuring the strong turbulent flow of cleaning fluid during each cycle of cleaning.

Conductivity sensor/transmitter

  • Ensure chemical levels reach predetermined set points.
  • Helps to ensure accuracy during cleaning and provides valuable data for verification and inspection of CIP systems.
For craft breweries, CIP systems are designed for fast, efficient, and consistent high-quality cleaning of product contact surfaces. The CIP system achieves high speed and consistency through automated cleaning processes, and high-quality cleaning through system monitoring and control. You need to customize the CIP system according to your own needs. Of course, if you need it, you can contact Micet Craft directly. We help you design the most suitable CIP system, and we can also provide you with turnkey brewery solutions.
